Soon after The Autobiography of My Body came out, I moved to Cambridge to be with my wife while she was in Divinity School at Harvard, and she suggested that—since she was an ardent Catholic, and I didn’t have a religious practice—we take up a new spiritual practice on neutral ground, so we began to take classes at the Cambridge Insight Meditation Center. Somewhat to my surprise, I discovered the spiritual practice I had been looking for all my life. I gradually got to know my teacher, Larry Rosenberg, and after I interviewed him for The Sun, he asked if I wanted to help him with a book he’d been trying to write. All of the insights in the book are his—I just did the writing, from transcripts of his talks—but this book is an account of the dharma he taught me all through the years that I continued to do retreats with him.
