Football Dreams

This is the book I had to write before I could write any others, the story of a boy who is fiercely trying to prove himself to his father while the man is dying of cancer (or in my own father’s case, leukemia). It is my most factually autobiographical novel, but I left out my siblings because I felt they deserved a book of their own (which I later wrote), so in that way the book isn’t psychologically accurate. And of course, there is a lot of invention in the events as I describe them. Many men have identified with this book, and written me about it, even men whose father didn’t die. I think the fact is that everybody is trying to prove themselves to their fathers, and few people ever succeed. That’s where the identification comes in. And that’s why the story seems familiar to a wide variety of men.
