Second Brother
This is another one of those books—like Football Dreams—that I was born to write, the story of me and my older brother, also of my relationship with a more spontaneous friend, who stood in contrast to my brother and pulled me in a different direction. I had been keeping notes on such a book for years. I would say that this book is psychologically autobiographical, but in an early scene I realized that I could write about myself better if I completely invented the events (“the truest poetry is the most feigning,” as Auden said). I, for example, actually played football in high school (as my first novel suggests), while in this book Henry Wilder runs cross country, like his brother. After all those years of note-taking, the writing of this book was effortless. I knew the story before I began.
