The Red Thread of Passion: Spirituality and the Paradox of Sex
Though this is a nonfiction book, I think of it as a sequel to The Autobiography of My Body. At the end of that book, the narrator says, “There is a new way to love in me, waiting for me to find it,” and I discovered that new way to love through my meditation practice, especially the body-centric practice of Soto Zen, which I began in 1995. I also think of this book as a period in my life, when books just seem to fall off the shelves and say, Read Me! I read through Walt Whitman, the works of D.H. Lawrence, the works of Alan Watts, all of whom had something to say on the subject of sex and spirituality. This is a book on a subject, but I think of it as a kind of memoir, a further unfolding in my understanding of these two subjects.
